The West Mesa Murders refer to the remains of 11 women and a fetus found buried in 2009 in the desert on the West Mesa of Albuquerque, New Mexico, United States. No suspects have been arrested and a serial killer is believed to be responsible.
Background[edit]
Between 2001 and 2005, 11 women were buried by an unknown assailant in an arroyo bank on Albuquerque's West Mesa, in an undeveloped area within city limits. Satellite imagery taken between 2003 and 2005 shows tire marks and patches of disturbed soils in the area where the remains were recovered. By 2006, development had encroached on the area, and soon after, the site was disturbed, buried, and platted for residential development.
Due to the 2008 Housing Bubble collapse, development on the west side halted before housing could be built at the burial site. After neighbors complained of flooding at the platted site (due to the burial of the natural arroyo), the developer built a retaining wall to channel storm water to a detention pond built in the approximate area of the burial site, inadvertently exposing bones to the surface.[1]

Authorities link man to murders after finding his parents dead when responding to call of shots fired. Jan 18, 2018 The suspected serial killer, who is 35, was convicted of manslaughter when he was just 18, according to the Arizona Republic. Cooksey and four others had attempted to. Phoenix has become a city of Serial Killers in recent years. The allegations against Cleophus Cooksey, Jr., is the latest case is the fourth since 2006 when the suspect is alleged to have killed.
Discovery[edit]
On February 2, 2009, a woman walking a dog found a human bone on the West Mesa, and reported it to police. As a result of the subsequent police investigation, authorities discovered the remains of 11 women and girls[2] and a fetus buried in the area. They were between 15 and 32 years of age, most were Hispanic, and most were involved with drugs and prostitution.[3]
Victims[edit]
The remains discovered in 2009 were identified as those of the following women, all of whom disappeared between 2001 and 2005:[4][5]
- Jamie Barela, 15
- Monica Candelaria, 22
- Victoria Chavez, 26
- Virginia Cloven, 24
- Syllania Edwards, 15
- Cinnamon Elks, 32
- Doreen Marquez, 24
- Julie Nieto, 24
- Veronica Romero, 28
- Evelyn Salazar, 27
- Michelle Valdez, 22
According to satellite photos the last victim was buried in 2005.
Syllania Edwards, a 15-year-old runaway from Lawton, Oklahoma, was the only African American, and the only victim from out of state.[6] Michelle Valdez was four months pregnant at the time of her death.[7]
On December 9, 2010, Albuquerque police released six photos of seven other unidentified women who may also be linked to West Mesa.[3][8] Police would not say how or where they had obtained the photos.[3] Some of the women appear to be unconscious, and many share the same physical characteristics as the original 11 victims.[3] The following day the police released an additional photograph of another woman; this woman was subsequently identified by family members, who reported that she had died of natural causes several years earlier.[9][10] On December 13, 2010, police reported that two of the women in the photos had been identified as alive, and could have valuable information if they can be located.[11] In June 2018, more bones were found near the site of the burials, but these were later determined to be ancient and not related to the West Mesa murders.

Police suspect that the bodies were all buried by the same person or persons, and may be the work of a serial killer, who has since come to be referred to as the West Mesa Bone Collector.[12][13] Authorities also believe that the murders are closely linked to the annual state fair, which attracts large numbers of sex workers to the area in the fall.[14]
No official suspects have ever been named in connection with the murders.[3] In 2010, a reward of up to $100,000 was being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible.[5]
Over time, a number of men have attracted police attention, though not named as full suspects, in connection with the murders.
Fred Reynolds was a pimp who knew one of the missing women and reportedly had photos of missing sex workers; he died of natural causes in January 2009.[15]
Lorenzo Montoya lived less than three miles from the burial site. In 2006 there were reportedly tire tracks leading from his trailer to the site.[13] In December 2006, Montoya strangled a teenager at his trailer and then was shot to death by the teen's boyfriend. It would appear the killings stopped after his death.[13][16]
In August 2010, police searched several properties in Joplin, Missouri associated with a local photographer and businessman in connection with the West Mesa cases.[3] They confiscated 'tens of thousands' of photos from the man, who reportedly used to visit the state fair in Albuquerque.[3]
In December 2010, convicted Colorado serial killer Scott Lee Kimball stated that he was being investigated for the West Mesa murders, but he denied killing the women.[17]
In 2014, a breakthrough on a decades-old case caused Albuquerque police to become interested in Joseph Blea regarding the murders. Blea has been dubbed the 'Mid-School Rapist' for his activities in the 1980s; police say he would often break into the homes of 13- to 15-year-old girls who lived near McKinley Middle School in Albuquerque and rape them. In one case, there was a DNA sample but the rape test kit wasn't re-run until 2010, eventually linking Blea to the rape.[18] In 2015, Blea was also suspected by police of killing a sex worker; his DNA sample was located on the inner waistband and belt of a sex worker found dead on Central Ave (a notorious street for sex work in the eastern part of the city). In addition, a tree tag from a nursery was found in the area where the West Mesa victims' bodies were buried; it was tracked to a nursery Blea once frequented.[19][20] Blea, in the Mid-School rape case, was sentenced to 36 years in June 2015, at 58 years of age.

Dwight Lamon Jones Arizona 2018 Serial Killer---Can divorce alone explain why a man leaves a youtube manifesto and kills 6 associated with his divorce and 2 tennis friends and then ends it with commando style shoot out with SWAT? Similar to other domestic violence killing sprees linked to divorce or estranged spouses. like Eulalio Tordil a DC federal security guard who Murdered Hi Estranged Wife Gladys At Her High School and then went on shooting spree and Nengmy Vang's Wisconsin Bank Law Firm Apartment Shooting Spree who wanted a divorce and was targeting his wife but ended up shooting people all over town.
June 4, 2018 7 killed including self Dwight Lamon Jones Arizona 2018 Serial Killer Police in Arizona say a suspect linked to the killings of several professionals Scottsdale, Arizona was found dead in a hotel room early Monday. June 4 after tracking him down to Extended Stay America as a police SWAT team closed in. He was identified as 56-year-old Dwight Lamon Jones. [1] Before the Scottsdale shootings, Dwight Lamon Jones apparently posted YouTube videos outlining what he saw as a conspiracy to take his son away [2] targeting a prominent forensic psychiatrist psychiatrist Steven Pitt on May 31, 2018[4] involved in high profile JonBenet Ramsey Colorado, Columbine High School shooting and Phoenix serial killer investigation, two paralegals and a psychologist . Veleria Sharp, 48, Laura Anderson, 49 were shot dead at the Law Offices of Burt, Feldman and Grenier, in Old Town Scottsdale on June 1 where Jones’ wife’s attorney, Elizabeth Feldman worked. On June 2, Marshall Levine, 72, was found dead outside of her business after Jones was looking for the therapist he had seen there. These 4 victims were connected to Jones through his divorce with his wife Connie. The final two victims were identified as Mary Simmons, 70, and Byron Thomas, 72 killed at their home in Fountain Hills.[3] Police say Simmons and Thomas had a 'social/recreational relationship' with Jones. Simmons and Jones met four to five years ago through tennis and would occasionally meet to play at local parks.[7] Forensic established the same gun was used in all of the shootings.
According to Rich Slavin, an assistant chief with the Scottsdale Police Department, Jones was arrested in 2008 or 2009 on charges of domestic violence, alleging that he mistreated his wife and a child.'[6] His former wife told reporters that she 'feared for my safety for the past nine years.'[2]Online records show Jones’ wife filed for divorce in 2009 and it was finalized in 2011. But the case continued on until 2017 because of battles over alimony and custody of the couple’s children. Jones’ wife sought an order of protection against him, and psychological and psychiatric evaluations were requested for Jones, according to court records. [3]
Retired Phoenix Police Department Deteective Richard Anglin, recognized the connection to her divorce and the three crime scenes Saturday night, June 1. Anglin contacted investigators and Connie Jones also contacted the Scottsdale Police on Sunday. [3] Pitt was shot dead outside of his office, “According to witnesses, there was a loud verbal argument heard outside of the offices just before shots were fired.'[3]
The previous year Arizona man Cleophus Cooksey Jr., 35, was arrested on Dec. 17, 2017 accused of a stunning murder spree in which he allegedly killed nine people in three weeks -- a rampage that would make him one of the most prolific serial killers in the state's history. After police responded to a call of shots fired they found Cooksey’s mother and stepfather dead. Cooksey was not linked to the other homicides until he was in custody, police said Thursday. [5]
Cooksey is ultimately charged in only eight deaths, it would drop him out of a tie with Aaron Saucedo, who has been charged with nine murders, and the Baseline Killer, Mark Goudeau, who has been convicted of nine, as the deadliest serial killer in Phoenix history.

In May and June 2018 a spree killer sought out and killed six people in Scottsdale, Arizona. The spree began on May 30 and ended June 4, when the shooter killed himself as police closed in.[1][2]
Shootings[edit]
Steven Pitt (59), a well-known forensic psychiatrist was shot and killed outside his office at 5:20pm on Thursday 31 May.[4] Pitt had examined Jones in connection with a 'bitter' divorce.[3][5] In 2006 Pitt helped the police identify the Baseline killer who had raped and murdered a series of women in Phoenix, Arizona.[4][6]
Veleria Sharp (48), and Laura Anderson (49), paralegals, were shot and killed at 2:15pm on Friday, 1 June in the downtown Scottsdale offices of Burt, Feldman, Grenier, the law firm where they worked.[1][5] A lawyer at the firm had worked on the Jones divorce.[2] By 11:30 pm on Friday June 1, police knew that the same gun had been used to kill Anderson, Sharp and Pitt.[5]
The body of Marshall Levine (72), a psychologist and counselor, was found just after midnight, as Friday turned to Saturday, June 2, in his Scottsdale office.[1] Levine was subletting his office from a woman who had provided counseling services to his son during the divorce, Jones' intended target.[3][5]
By Sunday afternoon, police had Jones under surveillance as he drove around Fountain Hills in his gold Mercedes Benz. At one point, Jones ditched a small bag containing a .22-caliber pistol, which police later determined to belong to one of two people, 70-year-old Mary Simmons and 72-year-old Bryon Thomas, who were shot and killed inside a Fountain Hills home. Their bodies were not discovered until Monday, 4 June. Police stated that ballistics ruled out the 22-caliber gun from having been used in any of the shootings.[5]
Investigation[edit]
The break in the investigation came when a retired Phoenix police married to Jones' ex-wife issued a statement saying her current husband, a retired Phoenix police detective, 'recognized the connection to my divorce and the three crime scenes and he notified the Phoenix Police violent crime unit on Saturday night.' Saturday was June 2.[3][2]
